CCSU in 3rd After Day One at NEC Championships
Ry Sanderson and Nick Trifone put forth silver medal performances to pace Central Connecticut during day one of competition at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Sanderson took second in the 10,000 meters, crossing the line in 31:36.20. Trifone was second in the high jump, recording a height of 1.92 meters. The Blue Devils are currently in third place with 37.5 points heading into the final day of competition on Sunday.

Sam Alexander and Matt Berube also scored points in the 10,000 meters and high jump, respectively. Alexander took fourth in the former, finishing in 32:02.94, while Berube tied for third in the latter, recording a mark of 1.89 meters. Berube also placed third in the long jump, recording a distance of 6.93 meters.
The CCSU 4x800 meter relay team of Matthew Whalen, Jeremy Schmid, Robert Weston and Anthony Gonsalves finished fourth with a time of 7:55.73. The finish qualified the Blue Devils for ECAC competition.
Whalen and Schmid also qualified for tomorrow's 1,500 meter final. Whalen recorded the fastest time of the day in the event, crossing the line in 4:00.39, while Schmid's time of 4:02.84 ranked him third on the day. Sean Smith also qualified for final competition on Sunday. The senior had the fourth fastest time in 400 meter preliminary action, finishing in 48.60 seconds.
Monmouth currently leads the meet with 58 points, while St.
Francis (PA) is in second with 43. Central Connecticut stands in
third with 37.5 points and defending champion Sacred Heart is
fourth with 27 points. The final day of competition will be on
Sunday.
