Men Top FDU, Stay Unbeaten in NEC Play
Blue Devils return to action at home on Tuesday night vs. Army
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team moved to 3-0 in Northeast Conference play with a 1-0 road victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday night. The win is the third straight and sixth in the last seven games for the Blue Devils, who are now 6-5-1 overall on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Josef Abele posted a season-high nine saves in net to record his fifth shutout of the season. The shutout is the six of the season for the Blue Devils.
Senior Jose Gamboa scored his first goal of the season, and the fourth of his career, just 4:10 into the match to give the Blue Devils the early lead. Gamboa took a corner kick from sophomore Zach Zurita and beat the FDU keeper to the lower right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
FDU held a 9-3 edge in shots on goal but the score from Gamboa in the first five minutes of the game would be the only score of the game.
Abele had perhaps his strongest game of the season, stopping all nine shots he faced in the match, including several in the final minutes as the Knights were trying to tie the match.
Gamboa's goal was his first of the season. Zurita's assist was his fourth, he leads the team with four goals and four assists on the season, good for 12 points.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday night hosting Army beginning at 7 p.m. Central will play five straight at home before finishing the regular season on the road vs. Bryant on Nov. 10. Fans can watch Tuesday's match live on www.NECFrontRow.com.
