Women's Hoops Falls Short at BC
The women's basketball team lost to Boston College by a score of 57-49 on Monday night.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Boston College on Monday night. The Blue Devils (6-7) held a 28-24 lead at the half, but Boston College (5-8) scored 33 points in the second half to earn the 57-49 victory. Junior Jaclyn Babe scored a game-high 23 points and added three steals in the loss.
The Blue Devils fell behind 15-7 in the first half before battling back to take a seven point lead. Jaclyn Babe scored 10 straight points for Central in the middle of the period. Babe hit a three pointer to start her run and then closed it with a three that cut Boston College's lead to 17-14.
Sophomore Lauren Arbogast gave Central their second lead of the game late in the half when she hit a pair of baskets which put the Blue Devils ahead 22-21.
Jaclyn Babe followed with a pair of jumpers and then a layup by sophomore Jessica Babe pushed Central to a seven point lead with 1:48 left in the half.
The Blue Devils 10-0 run gave them their 28-21 lead. A three pointer in the final minute by Boston College's Kerri Shields was the only basket the Eagles scored in the final 12 minutes of the half.
Jaclyn Babe finished the half with 14 points, two assists and two steals.
After the half, the Blue Devils and Eagles went back and forth, trading baskets and the lead.
Boston College took the lead for good on a layup by Deirdra Smith with 9:57 remaining. The basket made it a 39-38 game in favor of the Eagles.
Central answered with a jumper by Jaclyn Babe that cut the lead to 41-40, but Boston College continued to score, building a 52-45 lead with 3:20 left to play.
Jaclyn Babe hit her final basket of the night to make it a 52-47 game and junior Kirsten Daamen hit a pair of free throws to up Central's total to 49, but the Eagles matched the baskets and finished with a 57-49 victory.
Babe finished with a game-high 23 points. She scored 14 of Central's 28 points in the first half.
Jessica Babe recorded a game-high 10 rebounds, with eight of the 10 coming on defense. Eight different Blue Devils secured at least one rebound in the game.
Kirsten Daamen scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
The Blue Devils return to Detrick Gym for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday against Robert Morris. Then on Monday night Central will host 2011 NEC Champion St. Francis (PA). That game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
