Volleyball Recognized by AVCA for Academic Excellence
The Blue Devils have earned the AVCA recognition for 11 straight years.
For the 11th straight year, the Central Connecticut volleyball program was recognized for its excellence in the classroom with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for 2016-17. The AVCA recognized an all-time high 822 teams, surpassing last year's mark of 764 programs. A total of 132 Division I programs were honored this season.
The award was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Blue Devils had 10 student-athletes named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, including six who were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a 3.75 GPA or better. Nicole Dean graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was named the NEC Female Student-Athlete of the Year and was honored as a Henry Barnard Distinguished Student. In addition to the success in the classroom, CCSU qualified for the semifinals at the NEC Tournament in 2016.
CCSU will open the season at the Stetson Invitational on Aug. 25 against Florida Atlantic.
