Volleyball Delivers School Supplies to Smalley Academy
The Blue Devils delivered bags of school supplies they collected at collection drive.
Student-athletes and coaches from the Central Connecticut volleyball team delivered donations and school supplies to Smalley Academy in New Britain on Friday morning. The donations and school supplies were collected at basketball games in late February and the Blue Devils, along with the help of primary sponsor California Pizza Kitchen, made the delivery to the school's fourth and fifth-grade students and teachers.
Members of the volleyball teams assembled bags of school supplies and other donations for students and teachers at Smalley Academy that included pencils, folders, notebooks, gift certificates and other useful supplies and items. California Pizza Kitchen,a major sponsor of the event, allowed for their space to be used for assembling the bags. CPK, along with Costco, Target and Dunkin Donuts were also sponsors of the event and also contributed supplies and other items for the students and teachers.
"Our team volunteers at Smalley Academy throughout the school year and we have built great relationships with the students and staff of the school," said CCSU volleyball head coach Linda Sagnelli. "The event today is a great way for us to give back to some of the youngest members of our community and say 'Thank you!' to the students of Smalley."
The event, in its second year, blossomed out of a relationship between the CCSU student-athletes volunteering with Smalley Academy. The Blue Devils have held a School Supplies Drive each of the past two years to help give the students and teachers a replenished supply of school items for the second half of the school year.
