Maziarz 1-Meter Gold Helps Extend Swimming & Diving Lead At NEC Championships
400 medley relay and Cassidy Stotler pick up silver medals Friday night.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team extended its lead to 66.5 points with one day of competition remaining at the 2023 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The Blue Devils have 513 points, with Wagner at 446.5 in second place.
Jewelle Maziarz picked up the Blue Devils third gold medal of the week winning the 1-meter diving. The freshman scored 48.00 points on her final dive, putting her atop the platform for the first time all night, with 245.60 points. Elyse Boothroyd scored 222.90 points, good for sixth, while Zoe Baker finished seventh with 221.50 points, as CCSU picked up 45 points in the event.
The 400-medley relay snagged silver to finish off the night's performance, swimming a time of 3:48.30. Katie Czulewicz opened with a 56.83 split in the 100 back, followed by Cassidy Stotler, 1:03.41, for the breaststroke leg. Megan Dunnigan swam the butterfly leg in a time of 56.35 and Shannon Welcome brought it home, with a 51.71 anchor leg.
Cassidy Stotler picked up silver in the 100 breaststroke, dropping .52 from her morning swim and finishing at 1:03.65. Ella Discala picked up seventh place points, swimming 1:04.73. Abby Bacon went 1:06.92 and finished 15th place.
Nathalie Pena captured eighth place in the 100 backstroke, touching in a time of 58.79. Kelly Stotler placed 13th after a 58.43 effort Friday night, and Dunnigan placed 15th at 58.73.
Gabi Wroblewski finished 10th to lead the Blue Devils in the 200 fly, dropping nearly two seconds from her preliminary effort, with a swim of 2:07.81 touching at 2:07.81. Jillena Plowucha went 2:09.01 to place 13th and Kaylin McMahon placed 14th at 2:09.47.
Kyla Behrle went 2:12.29, for 19th, followed by Marley Milne at 2:14.00 and Wynter Berube, 2:15.10, for 21st and 23rd respectively.
The NEC Championship concludes Saturday, with prelims at 10:00am and finals at 6:00 pm.

200 Butterfly
- Plowucha (2:08.80), Wroblewski (2:09.14) and McMahon (2:10.00) earned spots in the consolation final
- Kyla Behrle (2:12.01), Marley Milne (2:14.43) and Wynter Berube (2:14.98) all earned berths in the evening session as well
100 Butterfly
- Pena set the pace out of heat three, finishing at 57.98 and earning the sixth-seed in the championship final Friday night
- Dunnigan and Kelly Stotler are the top-two seeds in the consolation final, with Dunnigan ninth at58.33 and Stotler 10th at 58.39
100 Breaststroke
- Cassidy Stotler is the Blue Devils top qualifier in the event, earning the second seed with a morning swim of 1:04.17
- Ella Discala went 1:04.89 in her prelim swim, and is the fourth seed
- Abby Bacon touched at1:06.91 and is the 15th seed Friday night
3-Meter Diving
- All three Blue Devils earned spots in the championship final, led by Maziarz and her 248.00 points
- Baker earned the fourth spot, at 219.85, with Boothroyd right behind at 219.25
