Lacrosse Improves to 6-0 at Home
The Central Connecticut lacrosse team improved to 5-2 in conference play with a victory over St. Francis (PA).
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team earned a 16-10 victory over St. Francis (PA) on Sunday afternoon. With the victory the Blue Devils are now 7-6 on the season and 5-2 in Northeast Conference play. Senior Ashley Perkoski totaled seven points in the game, including four goals against the Red Flash (2-13, 0-7 NEC).
With seven victories the Blue Devils tie the program record for wins, which was set last season.
After falling behind 1-0, the Blue Devils scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead, the Red Flash would not lead or tie the game after that point.
Perkoski scored unassisted to get Central on the board and senior Ashley Mara added a second goal 24 seconds later. Junior Mackenzy Ryan assisted on Mara's goal. Perkoski scored again, this time with the help of junior Betsy Vendel, and then sophomore Amanda Toke ended the run with the help of junior Meaghan McCurry.
Following a goal by the Red Flash, the Blue Devils again scored four consecutive goals.
Vendel scored unassisted and Ryan found the net with the help of Perkoski. Freshman Jessica Sudock scored on a free position goal and Central's final goal of the run came from junior defender Ali Roche who ran the field in an attempt to clear the ball and launched a shot which was deflected into the goal. The score was the first of the season for Roche.
St. Francis scored three goals, but the rally was ended when McCurry passed to Perkoski for a goal with 2:59 left in the half.
The Blue Devils improved on their 9-5 halftime lead by scoring four goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Perkoski passed to McCurry for a goal, Toke scored on a free position shot, Mara scored with the help of Ryan's second assist and McCurry ended the run with a goal off a pass from Vendel.
After a pair of Red Flash goals, McCurry completed her hat-trick with the help of Perkoski. The goal made it a 14-7 game.
St. Francis scored three late goals to cut their deficit to 14-10, but an unassisted goal from Vendel ended the Red Flash's momentum and with 2:28 remaining in the game Perkoski scored her fourth goal of the day. Toke assisted on the goal that set the final score at 16-10.
Senior goalkeeper Erin DeLancey stopped seven shots in the victory, her seventh of the season, which ties her own program record for wins in a season.
Mara scored a pair of goals and also grabbed a game-high four ground balls. She shared a game-high seven draw controls with Vendel.
Vendel and Mara combined for 14 of Central's 15 draw controls.
McCurry finished the game with five points, Vendel had four and Ryan and Toke each had three.
Perkoski totaled seven points on the day, and 15 total for the weekend.
The Blue Devils play their final regular season home game on Wednesday night against Holy Cross. That game will begin at 7 p.m. and will serve as Senior Day for the Class of 2012.
