Lacrosse Wins 11-5, Now 2-0 at Home
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team defeated Manhattan College 11-5 on Wednesday evening.
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team defeated Manhattan College, 11-5, on Wednesday evening. The Blue Devils are now 2-0 at home on the season. Senior goalkeeper Erin DeLancey limited Manhattan to only five goals in the game.
The Blue Devils scored early on the Jasper defense, building a 6-0 lead halfway through the opening period.
Junior Mackenzy Ryan led the opening run with a pair of goals. Both of her scores came on free position shots.
During the same stretch junior Betsy Vendel registered an unassisted goal to go along with three assists. Vendel helped senior Ashley Mara, senior Ashley Perkoski and junior Meaghan McCurry all register goals during the opening 15 minutes of play.
The Jaspers were able to post a pair of goals late in the half, but the Blue Devils halted Manhattan's momentum with a score at the 1:56 mark. Sophomore Claire Healy passed to McCurry for the goal, which gave Central a 7-2 halftime lead.
The Blue Devils outscored the Jaspers, 4-3, in the second half with Mara netting a pair of goals to complete her hat-trick. Mara was assisted by Healy and Vendel on her second half goals.
Vendel and Perkoski each scored once in the second half to finish the day with two goals. McCurry assisted on Vendel's goal, running her total points on the day to three.
Mara also finished with three points and Vendel led all players with six in the game.
The Blue Devil defense caused 11 turnovers in the game with junior Ali Roche and sophomore Ashley Olhausen each forcing a pair.
DeLancey anchored the Blue Devil defense, which has now held its opponents to just 17 goals over the last three contests. She stopped seven of the 12 shots that came at her net and ran her season save percentage above 50% in the process.
The Blue Devils controlled the ball for most of the game. Central held advantages in draw controls (11-7), ground balls (27-25) and shots (23-16).
The Blue Devils return to action on March 19, at the University of California Davis. That is the opening contest of a three game West Coast road trip.
