Messina Claims ECAC Pitcher of the Week Accolades
Messina earns award for fourth straight week.
Central Connecticut senior pitcher Laura Messina has been named the Corvias ECAC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth straight week it was announced on Tuesday. Messina went 5-1 last week for the Blue Devils, pitching four shutouts and posting an ERA of 0.52.
The Marlton, NJ native leads the nation with 15 shutouts and ranks third nationally with a 0.85 ERA. She also ranks sixth in walks allowed (0.78) and 12th in strikeouts (256) and wins (24).
Messina is now 24-5 on the season with a 0.85 ERA while posting 245 strikeouts and only 23 walks. She has compiled 98 career wins and 964 career strikeouts.
The senior pitched in all six games for CCSU last week, firing four shutouts and allowing just three runs over 40 innings in the circle
Messina twirled five complete games, striking out 37 opponents and only walking six. She held opposing hitters to a miniscule .161 batting average on the week.
She dominated on Saturday in a NEC doubleheader against third-place Saint Francis U. She hurled two complete game shutouts and didn't allow a Red Flash runner to advance past second base in either game, while ringing up 13 strikeouts. On Sunday, after a suffering a 2-0 loss to Robert Morris in game one, she rebounded to toss a 3-0 shutout and help the Blue Devils earn the split.
The Blue Devils are in action at Quinnipiac on Thursday.
