Messina Named NEC Pitcher of the Week
Senior wins the award for the fourth straight week
For the fourth straight week, and the sixth time this season, senior pitcher Laura Messina has been named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Messina went 5-1 last week for the Blue Devils, pitching four shutouts and posting an ERA of 0.52.
The weekly award is Messina's 18th career weekly Pitcher of the Week honor.
The senior pitched in all six games for CCSU on the week, recording a 5-1 record and firing four shutouts. She spun 40 innings in the circle and gave up just three runs to finish the week with an ERA of 0.52.
The Marlton, NJ workhorse twirled five complete games in five starts, striking out 37 opponents and only walking six. Messina held opposing hitters to just a .161 batting average against her on the week.
She was absolutely dominant on Saturday in a NEC doubleheader at home against the third place Saint Francis U Red Flash. She hurled two complete game shutouts on the day, striking out 13 and didn't allow a Red Flash runner to reach past second base in either game. On Sunday, after a 2-0 loss to Robert Morris, she rebounded to toss a 3-0 shutout as the Blue Devils earned the split.
Messina is now 24-5 on the season with a 0.85 ERA while posting 245 strikeouts and only 23 walks. She has 98 career wins and 964 career strikeouts.
