Malcolm, Camara Earn NEC Softball Weekly Awards
A pair of Blue Devils earned NEC Weekly awards on Monday afternoon.
Senior Kat Malcolm and freshman Brittany Camara of the Central Connecticut softball team both earned NEC weekly awards following excellent perfomances on the diamond this past week, the league announced Monday afternoon. Malcolm was named the NEC Player of the Week and Camara earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors after they helped CCSU go 5-2 in seven games over the past seven days. The Blue Devils are now 9-2 overall on the season.
Malcolm was on fire at the plate for the Central finishing the week with a remarkable slash line of .458/.500/.833. The Nutmeg State product collected 11 hits in 24 at-bats, good for the .458 average. Five of those hits were for extra bases, including two home runs. She drove in a team-best 10 RBI's, scored seven runs and swiped two bags. Malcolm recorded a hit in all seven games and is currently on a nine game hitting streak.
Malcolm hit her first home run of the season in a 4-1 setback to Towson at the USF Michele Smith Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. on Friday. She followed that with a three-run blast the next day against Colgate, which proved to be the game-winning hit as the Blue Devils came back to defeat the Raiders 9-5.
Malcolm capped off a great week with a huge game on Sunday against Army to lockup the NEC Player of the Week award. She went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI's, a run scored and a stolen base. Her bases clearing double in the third inning would be all CCSU would need as they cruised to an 8-0 victory.
The award marks the fourth time Malcolm has been named NEC Player of the Week in her career.
Freshman Brittany Camara finished the week going 8-for-25, good for a .320 average over seven games for the Blue Devils en route to picking up the NEC Rookie of the Week award. The Merrimack, NH native also scored seven runs and swiped two bases. The rookie reached base safely in six of the games and recorded two multi-hit games. Camara's best performance of the week came in the second game of a doubleheader against Hartford on Tuesday as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Blue Devils will return to action tonight at 6 p.m. with a game at USF. They will conclude the Sunshine State road trip with a doubleheader tomorrow against Purdue. Those games are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
