Women's Basketball Tops FDU, 72-67
Senior Lauren Arbogast had 18 points with a career-high four three-pointers.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team earned a 72-67 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at Detrick Gym. The Blue Devils (8-7, 2-3 NEC) led the Knights (1-15, 0-5 NEC) by as many as 19 points and never trailed after taking the lead for good with 16:06 left in the first half.
Senior Lauren Arbogast connected on a career-high four three-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points on a six-of-10 shooting performance. She added four rebounds in 24 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils dominated the paint scoring 34 points and holding the Knights to just 14. CCSU was also strong on the glass out rebounding the Knights 40-34. In the second half the Blue Devils pulled down 11 offensive rebounds, including three consecutive boards on free throw attempts in the final 29 seconds.
The three consecutive offensive boards led to four CCSU points that helped put the game away after FDU had cut the Blue Devil lead to four points for the first time since midway through the first half.
Arbogast hit on four-of-five shots from the field and three-of-three from behind the arc to lead CCSU to a 34-25 halftime advantage. Sophomore Amanda Harrington added four points and five rebounds in the period, while senior Jessica Babe recorded four steals and four points.
Babe finished with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. She was five-of-eight shooting in the game.
Harrington controlled the paint while on the floor and finished with six points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Sophomores TeJahne Malone, Kayla Miller and Raven Makins came off the bench and combined for 21 points. Makins led the group with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting. Miller and Malone each scored six points. Malone added six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Senior Brooke Bailey and freshman Aleah Epps each added a basket to give the Blue Devils a 25-7 advantage over the Knights in points off the bench.
The Blue Devils shot 49.1% (27-55) from the floor and 63.6% (7-11) from three, but struggled at the free throw line converting on just 11-of-21 attempts.
FDU shot just 38.3% (23-60) from the field, but was 9-of-18 (50%) from behind the arc and 12-of-15 (80%) at the free throw line.
CCSU women's basketball will return to action on Monday night at Sacred Heart. The Blue Devils and Pioneers will tip-off at 7 p.m.
