Men's Soccer Stopped at St. John's on Tuesday
Blue Devils return home to host NJIT on October 7.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team fell at St. John's, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Belson Stadium in Queens, NY. The Red Storm took advantage of two first half scores and then held up defensively to keep the Blue Devils off the board.
The loss drops CCSU to 2-5-1 overall, while SJU improves to 2-6-2.
St. John's got on the board just over nine minutes into the first half when Adrian Welch set up Mike Prosuk for the goal on a one-timer from six yards away at the 9:22 mark. The Red Storm doubled the lead in the 26th minute when a cross was deflected into the CCSU goal for a 2-0 lead.
Central turned up the pressure on the St. John's goal in the second half as seniors Freddy Metellus, Zach Zurita and junior James Randall each tested SJU's Jordan Stagmiller with shots on frame midway through the period, but he made the saves to keep the Red Storm shutout in tact.
The Red Storm tacked on a goal in the 90th minute when Luis Esteves fired a shot from the left side that found the back of the net to round out the scoring and make it 3-0.
Senior Josef Abele made four saves for the Blue Devils. Stagmiller made three stops for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm finished with a 13-7 edge in shots and a 2-1 margin in corner kicks on the evening.
Central returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when it returns to CCSU Soccer Field to host NJIT.
