Men's Soccer Drops 5-3 Decision in Home Opener to Siena
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision in its home opener to Siena on Wednesday night. The game was played at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Senior Robert Cavener had his second goal of the season for the Blue Devils, but they fall to 2-4 overall on the season. They return to action on Saturday night at Will Brook against Fordham.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision
in its home opener to Siena on Wednesday night. The game was
played at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Senior Robert
Cavener had his second goal of the season for the Blue Devils,
but they fall to 2-4 overall on the season. They return to action
on Saturday night at Will Brook against Fordham.
The Blue Devils struck first just over a minute into the match.
Following a foul on the Saints, senior Robert
Cavener had a free kick from the left side of the box. The
ball was passed off by freshman Ian
Smurthwaite and freshman Jose Pablo Gamboa Palvacini put it by
the keep for his first career goal.
Siena knotted the score at 1-1 at 17:50 on the second goal of
the season from Sindre Ek. He took a cross from Matt Rucio and
beat the Central keeper to the lower left side of the goal.
Central went up 2-1 on the second goal of the season from Cavener.
He took a pass from the top of the box from Jesse
Menzies and beat the keeper to the top left for the 2-1 lead in
the 22nd minute.
Siena tied the score at 2-2 after halftime on the first goal of the
season from Steve Covino. He took the rebound off a shot from Matt
Hemsley and beat the keeper to the lower right side of the goal in
the 52nd minute.
The Saints took the lead at 57:56 when Joey Tavernese scored for
the second time this season. He took a pass from James Beeston and
beat the keeper to the lower right. Just a minute later Ek scored
his second goal of the game off a Central turnover and made it
4-2.
Menzies made it a one goal game again as he scored for the first
time this season. He took a pass from Terrell Whitting and made it
4-3.
Siena wasted little time making it 5-3, when Ek scored his third
goal of the game in the 61st minute. Off a free kick from Covino
he beat the Central keeper for the two goal edge.
With the score 5-3, the game was called with 5:06 to play due to
lightning. Central is now 2-4 while Siena improves to 2-4 on the
year.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. hosting Fordham. The game will be played at Willow Brook Park in New Britain and admission is free of charge.
