Women's Track and Field Earn Share of NEC Title
Central Connecticut women's track and field was named Co-Champions of the Northeast Conference after a dominant series of races on Monday. Angie Rafter won three events for CCSU (plus another win from Day One) and was responsible for 40 points on her own on Monday, while Ashley Dana grabbed a first place finish of her own. TOP PERFORMANCES:
- After winning the 3,000 meter run yesterday, Rafter added her second individual victory early on Monday, breezing to an impressive 5:03.68 win in the 1 mile run. Just behind Rafter was her teammate Dana, who clocked in at second with a 5:04.23 finish.
- Alissa Hurd finished fourth in the high jump, leaping for 1.61m. Teammate Aaliyah Walker finished fifth in the triple jump with an 11.22 jump.
- After the silver in the mile, Dana churned out yet another impressive run to take the gold in the 800 meter run. Dana crossed the line at 2:14.31, just .22 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
- Rafter earned herself a hat trick with her third win of the weekend, this one in the 5,000 meter run. The senior was first across the line at 17:25.22. Clocking in just behind her was teammate Brooke Morabito, who finished in second at 17:25.64.
- Somehow, Rafter's superhero performance was still not finished yet.
- In CCSU's final race of the day, the 4,000 meter medley relay, the Blue Devils' team, consisting of Rafter, Dana, Morabito and Magnalen Camara, was able to put together one last push that propelled them to the title. The final leg of the relay was none other than Rafter, who had just finished up running the 5K minutes before the baton touched her hand again in the relay. It might as well have been Rafter's first race of the day, though, as the runner somehow kicked things into extra gear on the final lap, pushing CCSU to a 12:06.86 finish.
NOTES
- This is the first time that the NEC has named two teams Co-Champions. This was decided after CCSU and Fairleigh Dickinson University both finished with 98 points on the day.
