Paige Stringer Picks Up NEC Player & Rookie of the Week
The freshman hit three home runs and hit .454 over the weekend to collect the honors.
Freshman Paige Stringer of the Central Connecticut softball team was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as well as the Rookie of the Week on Monday. The Monroe, WA native blasted three home runs in four games against Mount St. Mary's over the weekend.
Stringer helped the Blue Devils complete a four game sweep over Mount St. Mary's, going 5-11 (.454) and recording 8 RBI's. With the team trailing by three runs in the sixth inning of the first game, Stringer stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam to give Central the lead. It was the first home run of her career. Stringer hit another home run in game two on Saturday, this time off the top of the right field foul pole. Her final home run over the weekend was a three-run shot to dead center field in game three.
Stringer, Kate Houghton, and Carli Backlund were all named NEC Prime Performers. Houghton threw a complete game on Saturday, allowing just one run and striking out five batters. Backlund secured the team's final victory on Sunday with a walk-off home run to right field. She finished the weekend 4-9 at the plate and had 4 runs batted in.
The Blue Devils head to UCONN on Wednesday for a matchup with the Huskies at 4:00 pm.
