Lawson, Huston Earn Northeast Conference Weekly Football Honors
Pair helped lead the Blue Devils to a 26-23 road victory at Fordham on Saturday night
Sophomore Dexter Lawson and redshirt freshman Kenyata Huston earned a pair of Northeast Conference weekly football honors on Monday. Lawson was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week, while Huston was named the Rookie of the Week. The Blue Devils went on the road to open the season and topped Patriot League foe Fordham 26-23 to start the season 1-0.
Lawson made multiple impactful plays to spark the Blue Devils on Saturday night. The sophomore cornerback created two turnovers and scored a defensive touchdown during the 26-23 road win. He totaled three tackles, including 1.0 TFL, and was also credited with one pass break-up. Thwarting a potential scoring drive, Lawson forced a first-quarter fumble that was recovered by teammate DJ Exilhomme at the CCSU 8-yard line.
He snuffed out a pass play on Fordham's first drive of the second half, dropping the receiver one yard behind the line of scrimmage on 2nd-and-10. Lawson's top highlight came with CCSU facing a one-point deficit in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The sophomore intercepted a third-down pass at the Fordham 48-yard line and raced the other way for a momentum-swinging score.
Huston made his five touches count during the road victory. The running back averaged 12.2 yards per rush attempt and logged one reception for a six-yard gain. The Empire State product registered CCSU's first touchdown of the season, capping the game-opening drive by breaking the play outside and turning upfield for a 34-yard scoring scamper. In the second quarter, his 19-yard burst on a 2nd-and-10 play set the Blue Devils up at the Rams' 3-yard line. Huston also forced a fumble on punt coverage.
Central returns to action this Saturday night at home hosting Merrimack beginning at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7.
