Senior running back James Mallory was named the
Northeast Conference football player of the week, it was announced
on Tuesday by the conference office. Mallory, who earned the honor
once as a junior, ran for 117 yards and a touchdown as the Blue
Devils opened their 2009 season with a 28-21 victory on the road at
Lehigh last Saturday.
Mallory, one of six captains this season for the Blue Devils,
surpassed the 2,000 career rushing mark for CCSU, becoming just the
fourth player in school history to reach that mark. Last season he
posted the second-best single season performance in school history
and was named Second Team All-NEC.
Eight of Mallory's carries resulted in either a first down or a
score as CCSU held possession for over 44 minutes in Saturday's
victory. His touchdown in the second quarter, his 19th career
touchdown, gave CCSU the 14-7 advantage. The 100-yard rushing
performance was the 10th of his career and his 10th in his last 12
games.
The Blue Devils, who are receiving votes in this week's Sports
Network FCS Poll, travel to #7 William and Mary on Saturday
beginning at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on ESPN Radio 1410
and online at CCSUBlueDevils.com.
