Mozzicato, Braun Recognized on NEC Weekly Baseball Honors
Central returns to action against Pittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 28.
Freshman Anthony Mozzicato was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week it was announced on Tuesday by the conference office. Mozzicato tossed 7.0 shutout innings in his first career start. Senior Andrew Braun was also recognized with a spot on the league's Prime Performer list for week two.
Mozzicato made his first collegiate start a memorable one, winning a rubber game on the road. Taking the ball for Sunday's series finale, the rookie southpaw spun 7.0 shutout innings to earn a 4-0 victory over MEAC member Bethune Cookman. Mozzicato allowed only two hits (both singles) and issued no bases on balls. Pitching to an 0.29 WHIP, the 6-foot-2 freshman fanned two batters and induced 11 groundball outs. Mozzicato, who did not allow a runner past first base, retired the side in order during the second, third and sixth frames.
Braun tossed 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit, in the Blue Devils' season-opening 2-0 win at Bethune-Cookman. The senior left-hander did not allow a B-CU runner until a double in the fifth inning. Braun finished the game with seven strikeouts and did not allow any walks.
The Central pitching staff enjoyed a strong opening weekend helping CCSU go 2-1. In the three-game series, Central starting pitchers allowed just one run on seven hits in 19.0 innings. The Blue Devils starting pitchers also posted 11 strikeouts against just two walks. The CCSU bullpen did not allow a run or walk in 7.0 innings of work while striking out six and scattering four hits. Following the opening weekend, the Blue Devils have the lowest team earned run average in the NCAA at 0.35.
