BU Tops Women's Soccer in Opener
Blue Devils will be off until next Friday night
Junior goalkeeper Nikola Deiter made nine saves in net for the Central Connecticut women's soccer team, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils dropped their season opener 3-0 on the road at #23 Boston University on Friday night. Central is 0-1.
The Terriers, who won a school-record 19 games last season, are 1-0. They came into the game ranked 23rd in the country in the August 7th NSCAA Preseason National Poll.
Deiter's nine saves were the most in a single game for the junior captain since last Sept. 11 when she made 10 in a 2-2 draw vs. Syracuse. Eight of her saves came before halftime.
BU led 1-0 at the break, off the first goal of the season from Brea Hewitt. She took a rebound off a corner kick and gave the Terriers the lead in the 29th minute.
Two goals in a five minute span in the second half pushed the lead to 3-0 for BU. Jamie Turchi scored in the 71st minute and then Hewitt added her second tally of the match five minutes later.
The Terriers held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal in the match, and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Blue Devils will be off until next Friday when they travel to Vermont for a 4 p.m. match. They will play twice in three days in the University of Vermont Fall Classic. On Sunday, Aug. 26, they will play New Hampshire at 11 a.m.
