Softball Takes Sunday Split at Wagner
Central hosts Bryant for a double-header on Wednesday May 1.
The Central Connecticut softball team split a pair of games on Sunday in Staten Island, NY against the Wagner Seahawks. The Blue Devils stand at 16-21 overall and 3-9 in the Northeast Conference, while Wagner is now 15-24 on the season and 5-11 in league. CCSU hosts Bryant in a double-header on Wednesday, May 1 for its final home games of the regular season.
GAME ONE
The Blue Devils took game one over the Seahawks 6-1 totalling 14 hits with just one error. Junior Giuliana Hathaway had two RBIs and two hits on her four at bats and classmate Alicia Bertolino had three hits for Central.
Freshman Rian Eigennman scored the first two runs for Central. In the first inning, she hit home plate off a double to center field from freshman Alexa Milius. Later in the third, the catcher scored again after sophomore Sydney Bolan sent one deep to left field.
Hathaway's first RBI came in the fourth inning. A double to left center sent junior Kristen Ulmer home giving the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead. Ulmer scored again in the top of the sixth off a sacrificed fly out by freshman Carli Backlund.
Central scored its final two runs in the final inning with a home run by Carley Stoker and a second was a single-RBI to left field by Hathaway allowing Emily Cronin to score her only run of the game.
The Seahawks scored its only run in the bottom of the third off a home run to center field.
Stoker pitched the first three innings for CCSU allowing just two hits and one run facing 15 batters. Rookie Kari Marks finished the game throwing six strikeouts against 18 batters faced.
GAME TWO
The Seahawks took the second game 7-4. Sophmore Meg Dugas had two RBIs for the Blue Devils and Milius and Ulmer each totaled two runs and two hits a piece.
Wagner got off to an early 2-0 lead holding CCSU scoreless for the first three innings. Central got on the board in the top of the fourth with a double RBI to left field from Cronin putting the game at 2-2. The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of its over pushing the lead 5-2.
Central scored its final two runs in the top of the sixth. Ulmer cracked the ball down the right field line sending Bolan across home plate. Dugas had a sacrificed fly to left field allowing Milius to score putting Central down by just one run.
Wagner scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and allowed just one hit by the Blue Devils in the seventh to close out the game.
Sophomore Ashley Antonazzo was at the mound for Central for 3.1 innings allowing six hits and five runs and throwing two strikeouts. Marks pitched the final 2.2 innings throwing another six strikeouts allowing five hits and two runs.
