Blue Devils Outlast Holy Cross 6-3 Thursday Night
Central plays a double-header at Sacred Heart on Sunday.
The Central Connecticut softball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Crusaders of Holy Cross 6-3 Thursday night in Worcester, MA. The Blue Devils improve to 12-14 overall and 0-4 in the NEC, while Holy Cross falls to 4-23 and 1-5 in Patriot League.
Junior Sarah Ogilvie led the Blue Devils with one hit and two RBIs on her two at bats. Classmate Giuliana Hathaway and freshman Rian Egienmann had two hits each for Central.
The Crusaders allowed no hits from CCSU in the first four innings and took an 2-0. Holy Cross scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning off a throwing error by the Blue Devils. Later in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, Bailey Chavez singled to left field for a single-RBI before.
Central tied the game in the top of the fifth. Ogilvie stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a sacrificed fly to left field allowing sophomore Kristen Ulmer to come home. Eigenmann recorded an RBI soon after with a single to right field sending junior Emily Cronin across home plate.
Holy Cross scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Sydney Behrens hit a triple to right field and scored on another error by the Blue Devils, taking the lead 3-2.
Ogilvie's second RBI came in the top of the seventh when she doubled sending Hathaway home to tie the game 3-3. Central allowed no hits for the Crusaders sending the game into extra innings.
The Blue Devils totaled four hits and three runs in the eighth to pull out the win. Doubles by sophomore Sydney Bolan and freshman Alexa Milius and an RBI by Cronin gave Central its final runs of the game.
Freshman Carley Stoker pitched all eight innings for the Blue Devils allowing just four hits and three runs. She threw four strikeouts and totaled two errors on the game.
