Men's T&F at NEC Championships This Weekend
The Blue Devils are set to compete at the 2014 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 8-9 in Landover, MD.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team will kick off the 2014 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday, February 8, at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD. Competition is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, and continue through Sunday, February 9.
Last season, the Blue Devils finished third overall for the second-consecutive season, registering 100.0 team points. Former NEC school Monmouth took the gold in the 2013 NEC Indoor Championships, tallying a score of 164.5, followed by LIU Brooklyn in second with a score of 128.0. Sacred Heart claimed fourth with 64.0 points and Mount St. Mary's rounded out the top five with 51.5 points.
En route to earning the bronze, CCSU posted three individual wins in the competition, two of which came from Craig Hunt. Hunt won both the 3,000m and 5,000m races with season-best times of 8:31.83 and 14:54.75, respectively.
Now a senior, Hunt looks to defend his titles at this year's championships. Hunt has performed well this season leading up to this weekend's competition, breaking the CCSU record in the 3,000m run with his time of 8:17.22. His time surpassed current assistant coach and former Central standout distance runner Sam Alexander's time of 8:17.58.
In addition to Hunt's impressive finishes, CCSU also claimed the gold in the distance medley relay last season. The squad, consisting of sophomore Malcolm Connor, juniors Joey Farrington and Brian Biekert as well as former Blue Devil Joseph Gioielli, crossed the finish line in 10:15.75 to claim the victory.
