Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson in Northeast Conference action on Saturday at N.F.B. Complex. Central rebounded from a 5-2 setback in the first game with a 9-5 win in game two to win the weekend series with a pair of wins.
The Blue Devils return home to host Mount St. Mary's for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.

KEY MOMENTS (Game 1)
- The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, which included a two-run homerun by Tom Ruscitti.
- Sophomore Dan Covino led off the fifth with a single and stole second. He would score on a single by junior Jay Devito. With two outs, senior Dave Matthews would double home senior Buddy Dewaine to make it 3-2.
- FDU would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning and Brendan Medoro would retire the Blue Devils in order in the ninth to seal the win.
KEY MOMENTS (Game 2)
- FDU built a 3-0 lead after two innings in the second game. Ruscitti had a two-run single in the firstand Mike Veit added an RBI-single in the second.
- Covino would knock a pair of home runs to give CCSU the lead. In the third, he led off with a solo shot. He would follow that with a two-out, three-run homerun in the fourth to make it 4-3.
- Central would add to its lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Matthews, junior Matt Bertochi and freshman Mike Torniero each had RBI singles to make it 7-3.
- Junior Peyton Stephens homered for the second straight day with a solo homerun in the seventh to make it 8-3.
- FDU would get a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to get within, 8-5. Bertochi would single home a run in the ninth to make it 9-5 for CCSU before freshman Dominic Niman closed the game out with a 1-2-3 ninth.
NUMBER TO KNOW
5- Central had five stolen bases in the second game of the doubleheader. It was the most in a game for the Blue Devils since swiping seven against the Knights on May 19, 2017.
NOTES
- Covino had three hits in the doubleheader. He went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs in the second game.
- Torniero was 4-for-4 in game two with an RBI and two runs.
- Devito had two hits in the second game and has now hit safely in 11 of 12 games this season.
- Freshman Jake Neuman got the win in game two after coming on to throw 5.0 innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits and had a pair of strikeouts.
- Senior Brandon Fox started the first game of the doubleheader. He went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking just one.
- FDU's win in game one snapped a 10-game regular season win streak for CCSU in the series dating back to May 8, 2016.
