Volleyball Falls at Temple, 3-1
The Blue Devils will play Cornell and Navy on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to the Temple Owls in four sets on Friday. The Blue Devils (5-6) won the opening set before dropping three straight to end the match. The match was the first of the Temple Invitational.
The Blue Devils opened the match with a 25-13 victory in the first set. Senior Blaike King and freshman Makenna Lommori each had long service runs, which were split up by just three points for the Owls. Over the stretch the Blue Devils were able to increase their lead from 3-2 to 15-5.
The Owls (8-4) made 12 attack errors in the set, which helped fuel Central's 12-3 run. The Blue Devil offense registered 11 kills in the set with King, Lommori and senior Jennifer Waddill all registering two kills. Senior Jamie Rademacher led the team with three kills in the set. She finished the match with seven kills.
Temple captured the final three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-19. The Blue Devils were tied with the Owls late in the fourth set, but Temple pulled away from the 18-18 tie for the victory.
King led the Blue Devils with 13 kills and Waddill recorded 10 to join her classmate in double-digits. Lommori was the primary setter for the Blue Devils and recorded 39 assists.
On defense, four Blue Devils reached double-digit digs. Sophomore Brittany Schumacher led the way with 18, followed by 12 from senior Emily Cochran and Lommori. Junior Amalia Ashley had 10 in the match.
At the net Rademacher and Lommori each assisted on six blocks. As a team CCSU finished with 11.0 total blocks.
The Blue Devils will play a pair of matches against Cornell and Navy on Saturday. The first will begin at 10 a.m. and the second match will follow around 1 p.m.
