Softball to Host Mount for Sunday Senior Day
The Blue Devils will close NEC competition at home Sunday.
The Central Connecticut softball team will honor the 2014 seniors on Sunday as they host Mount St. Mary's for their final NEC matchup of the season in a doubleheader set to begin at 12 p.m.
The Blue Devils (25-14, 9-5 NEC) are currently ranked second in the NEC, just one spot ahead of the Mountaineers (19-20-1, 7-5 NEC) and are still looking to clinch an NEC Tournament berth. On Friday, the Mount was swept by Bryant, who earned the right to host the 2014 NEC Tournament with the victories. With several outstanding NEC contests, Bryant is the only team to have clinched a spot in the tournament.
As of Monday's NCAA rankings release, the Blue Devils are ranked #10 in the nation with a 1.62 earned run average. Junior pitcher Laura Messina posts a 1.49 ERA and was also ranked tied for second in the country, first in the NEC, in shutouts with 10 before adding another this week against UMass-Lowell.
Messina currently leads the league in strikeouts (221) while Mount St. Mary's Nicole Pagano ranks second with 187. Pagano edges Messina with a 0.95 ERA.
Last season, the Blue Devils split with the Mountaineers, dropping the first game 5-3 before coming back to claim the 11-2 victory in five innings.
The squad will see off seniors Tessa Brown, Arielle Bruno, Julie Marks and Emily Pogemiller on Sunday in a senior day ceremony set to begin before the first pitch. Fans can follow all of the action live via LIVE STATS.
