Hunt and French Earn NEC Weekly Honors
This is Hunt's third NEC Athlete of the Week honor this season.
The Central Connecticut men's cross country team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards this week, as the NEC named senior Craig Hunt NEC Athlete of the Week and freshman Derek French NEC Rookie of the week on Tuesday. The honor is Hunt's third this season and French's second.
Both student-athletes demonstrated solid performances this past Friday at the CCSU Mini Meet, a 5K course at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT.
Winning his second meet of the season, Hunt claimed victory at the CCSU Mini Meet with a time of 14:58.45. The senior won the 5K against a field of 119 competitors, including harriers from five NEC schools. Hunt was the only runner to cross the finish line in less than 15 minutes and ran a 4:50 average mile, finishing over eight seconds before his nearest competitor.
French also demonstrated an impressive showing at Friday's meet, placing 36th out of 119 competitors. He was the first NEC freshman to cross the finish line with his time of 15:46.98 in the 5K race and posted an average mile of 5:05.
Central Connecticut finished second behind Providence at the meet, scoring four runners in the top 25.
The Blue Devils return to action this Saturday at the 2013 Northeast Conference Championships hosted by Saint Francis U. The defending champions look to claim their fifth consecutive title this weekend.
