Men's T&F Concludes Sorlien Memorial Invitational
The men's indoor track and field team will be back in action next weekend at Boston University for the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team completed action at the Sorlien Memorial Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet was held at Mackal Field House on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. The Blue Devils were led by senior Jamal Fruster on the track and sophomore Kwency Crittenden in the field events. Central finished the meet with fourteen top-ten finishes at the meet.

NEC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, Jamal Fruster, had another impressive meet this weekend at the Sorlien Memorial Invitational. Fruster recorded the best finish at the meet for the Blue Devils as he picked up a gold medal in the 200 meter dash. The senior standout finished the event with a time of 22.62, less than a second slower than his personal-best time, for the victory.
Crittenden logged the best finish for CCSU in the field events with a fifth place finish in the triple jump. The Windsor product leaped to a distance of 13.87 meters in the finals to earn his fifth place finish.
In the 60 meter dash finals heat, Central had two athletes finish on the podium and both recorded new career-best times in the process. Sophomore Jevon Elmore finished second overall, taking the silver with a personal-best time of 6.91 and improving on the personal-best time of 6.97 he had set in the preliminary heat earlier in the day.
Freshman David Campbell finished right behind Elmore in third place with a time of 7.03. Campbell, who ran the 60 meter dash for the first time this season at the meet, also improved on his previous personal-best time of 7.07 he had set earlier in the day.
Sophomore Kendall Walker had a productive day on the track recording two top-ten finishes for the Blue Devils. In the 200 meter dash, Walker took the bronze with a time of 22.91 and then followed that performance up with a ninth place finish in the preliminary round of the 60 meter dash. Walker just missed the cut to advance to the finals heat of the event with a time of 7.15 , which was also just .01 off his career-best time.
Junior Malcolm Connor picked up a sixth place finish in the 500 meter dash logging a time of 1:07.58.
Senior Patrick Hubbell crossed the finish line with a time of 2:34.32 in the one mile run to earn a ninth place finish in his only event on the day.
Senior Jordan Watkins and freshman Tyler Latham both had impressive days for CCSU in the 60 meter hurdles. The duo both qualified for the finals heat with Watkins finishing second in the prelims with a time of 8.32 and Latham finishing third with a new personal-best time of 8.36.
In the finals heat of the 60 meter hurdles, Watkins took the bronze with a time of 8.30 and Latham finished fifth with a time of 8.44.
The 4x400 team of sophomore Zach Andrews, Connor, Latham and Fruster picked up a third place finish in the event out of 15 teams. The squad finished with a time of 3:26.62 to earn the bronze.
In the high jump, freshman Malik Gordon led the way for CCSU clearing 1.89 meters. The rookie cleared 1.84 meters on his third attempt and 1.89 meters on his first attempt before failing to clear 1.94 meters in three tries.
Freshman Mike Lang recorded a 10th place finish in the long jump. The Prospect, CT native leaped to 6.37 meters to earn his top-ten finish.
In the throwing events, senior Michael Ficorilli led the way in a big way for the Blue Devils. The veteran opened the meet with a huge throw of 14.92 meters on his second attempt in the weight throw and picked up a ninth place overall finish with that mark. The mark also proved to be a new personal-best for Ficorilli. He followed that up with a 12th place finish in the shot put with a season-best distance of 14.18 meters.
