Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award
The Central Connecticut volleyball team was recognized with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season it was announced by the organization on Monday. The Blue Devils have achieved the team academic honor for 15 consecutive seasons, which is the sixth-longest active streak in Division I.
"I am proud of how our student-athletes continue to push themselves to achieve high academic standards," CCSU head coach Linda Sagnelli said. "They continue to set the standard for future CCSU volleyball teams on and off the court."
The AVCA recognized 1,275 teams across all levels, including a record 243 NCAA Division I programs. The AVCA Team Academic Award was instituted in 1992-93 to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Blue Devils had 11 student-athletes named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, including five named to the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll for a 3.75+ GPA. The team had a department-best 3.4 GPA during the spring semester. CCSU went 4-4 during a condensed spring 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emma Henderson and Isabelle Roufs both earned All-Northeast Conference Second Team recognition for the second straight season.
