Women's Volleyball Earns NEC Team Sportsmanship Award
The Blue Devils have earned the honor in back-to-back seasons.
The Northeast Conference announced the Fall Team Sportsmanship Awards for each of the six fall sports on Tuesday with Central Connecticut earning the honor for women's volleyball. The Blue Devils were honored with the award for the second straight season.
The awards were instituted by league Presidents in 2008 and are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
"It's a constant source of #NECPride that our student-athletes and coaches so fervently embrace fair play and winning with integrity," said Noreen Morris, NEC Commissioner. "I salute our team sportsmanship honorees for creating an environment of respect and support during athletic competition, and in doing so representing the NEC in such a positive manner."
The volleyball team earned back-to-back Sportsmanship Awards after tying for second in the regular-season standings. CCSU went 13-13 overall and played in the NEC Tournament semifinals. The Blue Devils had three all-conference selections, including junior Madelyn Kaprelyan who was named NEC Player of the Year. The team was honored with the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 12th straight year. The team has been active in community engagement activities and will hold its annual school-supply drive on Saturday, Feb. 23.
