Quirarte, Galabova Earn Molten/NEC Volleyball Weekly Honors
The Blue Devils face Bryant on Friday in the NEC Semifinals.
Senior Raquel Quirarte and junior Gala Galabova earned Molten/Northeast Conference weekly awards in the final week of the regular season it was announced by the league office on Monday. Quirarte was named the co-Player of the Week, while Galabova was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
The Blue Devils capped the regular season with a 13-12 record and tied for second with a 10-4 league mark. Central now turns its attention to the NEC Tournament as the third-seeded Blue Devils prepare to face Bryant in Friday's semifinals.
Quirarte was very efficient in two Central Connecticut wins to conclude the regular season, including the Blue Devils' first victory over LIU Brooklyn since 2010. The Auburn, CA product hit .370 for the week with just six errors in seven total sets over the weekend. She celebrated senior day by hammering 14 kills and averaged one block per set in the four-set triumph over the Blackbirds. The previous night against St. Francis Brooklyn, the senior posted 12 kills in a CCSU sweep. Quirarte finished the week averaging 3.71 kills, 1.43 digs and 0.71 blocks per set.
Galabova was assertive at the net all weekend, registering 1.86 blocks per set as CCSU defeated both St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn. She dominated up front against the Terriers with six blocks in just three sets. That aggressiveness at the net continued into Central's matchup with the Blackbirds, totaling seven blocks in the four-set victory over the NEC regular season champion. Galabova, a two-time Molten/NEC Defensive Player of the Week, finished the regular season leading the league with 1.26 blocks per set.
