Volleyball Wins at Robert Morris, 3-1 on Friday
Madelyn Kaprelyan posted her fourth triple-double of the year.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team won, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 25-19), at Robert Morris on Friday night in Northeast Conference action. Junior Madelyn Kaprelyan compiled her fourth triple-double of the year in the win, while senior Raquel Quirarte added a double-double. Central returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Saint Francis U.
The Blue Devils improved to 9-10 overall on the year, while moving to 6-2 in conference play. RMU slipped to 8-15 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Kaprelyan had a team-high 17 kills to go with 17 assists and 14 digs. Quirarte finished with 12 kills and a team-leading 19 digs. Sophomore Emma Henderson added 11 kills.
Junior Erin McDermott had a team-high 25 assists, while senior Kaitlyn Kushman led CCSU with 19 digs. Junior Gala Galabova had six blocks and Quirarte had five blocks to lead the defense.
Central broke a 6-6 tie in the first game with back-to-back kills by Henderson and Kaprelyan to take the lead. The teams would remain close throughout, but CCSU would not give up the lead. RMU would close within, 23-21, until a kill by Quirarte sparked the Blue Devils scoring three straight points to close the game.
The Colonials bounced back in the second game, using a 12-2 run to build a 15-6 lead. The Blue Devils would chip away at the lead, running off a 6-1 run of their own to get within 20-18. Following a Colonials timeout to break the run, CCSU came back with three straight points and would tie the game at 21-21 after a block by Henderson. RMU rebounded with four straight points to take the set and tie the match.
The Blue Devils would come back in a back-and-forth third set. The Colonials used a run of five unanswered points to go ahead, 23-21, before kills by Henderson and Kaprelyan tied the game. RMU would get a kill for game point, but Kaprelyan and Quirarte would record consecutive kills to swing the set back to Central. After an RMU timeout, Kaprelyan and sophomore Nicole Kramer teamed up for a block to close the set.
In the fourth game, CCSU erased an 11-8 deficit with five straight points on McDermott serves to take the lead, 13-11. Although the Colonials would close within a point, Central maintained its lead and would close the match on a 5-2 run, which included Kramer and junior Morgan Woycik teaming up on back-to-back blocks.
