Volleyball Wins in Straight Sets at St. Francis Brooklyn
Head coach Linda Sagnelli won her 300th career game at Central Connecticut in Friday's win at St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team won, 3-0, at St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday. The victory was head coach Linda Sagnelli's 300th career win at CCSU. Juniors Erin McDermott and Madelyn Kaprelyan each had a double-double in the win for the Blue Devils.
CCSU won by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-21, to 6-8 overall and remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play at 3-0. St. Francis slipped to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the league.
McDermott tallied 24 assists and 10 digs for Central, while Kaprelyan had 14 kills and 13 assists. Sophomore Emma Henderson chipped in with 11 kills, while senior Raquel Quirarte added 11 digs.
Central posted a .270 hitting percentage as a team while limiting the Terriers to a .121 percentage.
The Terriers led, 8-3, early in the first set before a run of four straight points for CCSU was capped by consecutive kills by Henderson to make it 10-10. Central would take the lead on an 8-1 run and a kill by Quirarte made it 18-14. Quirarte would serve three straight points to give CCSU a 24-18 lead. The Terriers would score three in a row, but an error would end the streak and give the opening game to the Blue Devils.
CCSU opened the second game 4-1 and would build the lead to 10-4. The Blue Devils led throughout the second game and took the game, 25-19, after a block by Quirarte and junior Gala Galabova.
St. Francis would go ahead 3-0 in the third set, but CCSU took the lead for good midway through the stanza. Central scored four straight points and an ace by Kaprelyan made it 19-14. SFC would get within 24-21 after a kill by Henderson set up match point, but a kill by Kaprelyan would end the match.
Central is back in action on Saturday when it faces LIU Brooklyn in a rematch of last season's Northeast Conference championship.
