Volleyball Wins NEC Opener Over Robert Morris, 3-0
The Blue Devils host Saint Francis U on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team dropped Robert Morris, 3-0, in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Detrick Gymnasium. Junior Madelyn Kaprelyan had a double-double to lead the Blue Devils in the straight-set win. Central improved to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the NEC, while RMU is now 6-9 overall and 0-1.
CCSU won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-23.
Kaprelyan had 13 kills and 15 assists. Senior Raquel Quirarte added 12 kills for CCSU, with four digs. Sophomore Emma Henderson had nine kills and two aces. Junior Erin McDermott had 24 assists and sophomore Ashlyn Eisenga had 12 digs.
Central took the lead from the start in the opening game and opened a 7-3 lead after an ace by Kaprelyan. The Blue Devils would push the lead to as much as 16-9 before RMU would cut the deficit to just 17-14. The Blue Devils would maintain the lead and go ahead 24-16 after an ace by Henderson. A service error by RMU would end the opening game.
CCSU jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the second set. McDermott served the first five points of the game and Eisenga would serve four straight, capped off by a kill from Quirarte. The Colonials would only get as close as 18-12. Eisenga would close the set out with an ace.
In the third game, RMU would score three straight and led 11-9. The Blue Devils would erase the deficit and the teams would be tied at 21-21 after an RMU error. A kill by Quirarte was followed by a Henderson ace to put CCSU in control. The Colonials would get within, 24-23, but Kaprelyan closed the match with a kill.
CCSU held RMU to a .202 hitting percentage and had 12.0 blocks on the night. Quirarte, junior Gala Galbova and sophomore Eline van Heijningen each had three total blocks.
