Volleyball Drops Drops Match at Sacred Heart, Qualifies for NEC Tournament
Blue Devils will be the #4 seed in next week's tournament
The Central Connecticut volleyball team dropped its regular season finale on the road at Sacred Heart on Sunday, falling by a score of 3-2. The Blue Devils won the first set 25-16 but SHU rebounded to win the second 25-22. Central answered to win the third 25-22, but the Pioneers won the final two sets 25-10 and 15-12 to claim the victory.
With the loss the Blue Devils are 14-12 overall and 9-5 in Northeast Conference play. They will be the fourth seed in next week's tournament, to be played at Sacred Heart. The Blue Devils and Pioneers will meet in the semifinals. Each team beat the other on their own home court this season.
Sacred Heart is 21-7 overall and 13-1 in the league with the win. The lone conference loss came at Central Connecticut earlier this season.
Sophomore Raquel Quirarte and freshman Morgan Woycik each had eight kills to lead the Blue Devil offensive attack. Senior Brooke Schwab added seven kills (without an error) and 13 blocks for the Blue Devils.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Kushman had 16 assists to go along with 15 digs, while freshman Erin McDermott had 17 assists to help pace the Blue Devil offense. Senior Rachel Fish had 17 digs to lead the defense.
The Blue Devils will be the #4 seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament, facing the Pioneers again this weekend, in Fairfield.
