Volleyball Falls to Robert Morris, 3-1, on Saturday
Central hosts Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell, 3-1, to Robert Morris on Saturday in Northeast Conference action at Detrick Gymnasium. The defeat was the first at home for CCSU on the season as its record slips to 11-9 overall and 6-2 in NEC play.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday afternoon in a 3:00 p.m. matchup with Saint Francis U.
Sophomore Raquel Quirarte had a team-high 13 kills for Central, while senior Cassidy Stankowski added 11 kills and 26 digs. Senior Rachel Fish finished with 20 digs, while junior Lindsey Massicotte chipped in with 19. Freshman Erin McDermott had 28 assists and sophomore Kaitlyn Kushman finished with 21 assists.
The Colonials used a 7-1 run in the first set to erase an early deficit and build a 10-9 lead. The set remained close and following a kill by freshman Morgan Woycik, CCSU would take a 21-20 lead. RMU responded with four straight points to go ahead 24-21 and after a kill by CCSU senior Brooke Schwab would stem the run, the Colonials closed the set out, 25-22.
Central responded in the second set and took an 11-6 lead after a kill by junior Maddie Smith. The Blue Devils would keep the margin to no less than three points throughout and tooke its largest lead of the set after a kill by Stankowski made it 20-11. CCSU would go on to even the match after taking the set, 25-17.
RMU scored the first four points of the third set and would lead throughout. A kill by Stankowski would get CCSU withing, 6-5, but the Colonials responded by pushing its lead to 13-6 and would close out the set by winning, 25-18.
The fourth set was tightly-contested throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points. A kill by Quirarte would give CCSU a 16-13 edge but RMU would come back with five unanswered points. The Blue Devils would have a chance to take the set after a kill by Quirarte and an RMU error made it 25-24 with Central serving. After a timeout, the Colonials got a reprieve and took advantage of consecutive CCSU serving errors before closing out the match with a 28-26 win in the set.
Central is back in action on Sunday in an NEC matchup with Saint Francis U.
