Volleyball Downed by New Mexico St., 3-0, in Brown Invitational Opener
CCSU plays Brown and Binghamton on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to New Mexico St., 3-0, on Friday at the Brown Invitational in Providence, RI. Sophomore Raquel Quirarte had a team-high eight kills to lead CCSU. The Blue Devils' record moves to 5-5 on the season.
Quirarte had eight digs to go with her team-high kills. Senior Rachel Fish finished with 13 digs, while classmate Brooke Schwab finished with five total blocks. Freshman Erin McDermott had 14 assists and sophomore Kaitlyn Kushman added 10 assists.
New Mexico State improved to 7-4 on the season.
The Aggies scored the first three points in the opening set before CCSU got back within 3-2. Fish would serve two staight points for CCSU midway through the set to tie the score at 11-11, but after a timeout NMSU came out with a 6-1 run and would go on to claim the set 25-20.
Senior Cassidy Stankowski would serve four straight points for the Blue Devils in the second set to help build an 8-3 lead. A kill by Quirarte would put CCSU in front, 18-15, before New Mexico St. ran off a 6-1 run to build a 21-19 lead. The Aggies would score the final two points of the set to win, 25-21.
The teams went back-and-forth in set three before Kushman served two straight points to give CCSU a 18-15 lead. NMSU would respond with six straight points to take the lead for good and go on to win the set 25-21.
Central continues play in the tournament on Saturday against Brown at 12:30 p.m. and against Binghamton at 4:30 p.m.
