Volleyball Drops Finale at Big Green Invitational to Army, 3-0
Kaprelyan named to All-Tournament Team
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to Army West Point, 3-0, on Saturday morning at the Big Green Invitational in Hanover, NH. It was the Blue Devils' finale at the tournament after splitting a pair of five-set matches on Friday.
CCSU is 5-4 on the season.
Army scored the final three points to take the opening set. A kill by sophomore Raquel Quirarte gave the Blue Devils an early lead at 11-9 before Army responded with seven straight points to build a 16-11 lead. Freshman Madelyn Kaprelyan accounted for four kills and a block in a CCSU run that put it back in front, 19-17. The teams went back and forth the remainder of the set, but after a kill by Quirarte knotted the score at 22-22, the Black Knights rattled off three straight points to take the set, 25-22.
The second set was a closely-contested, back-and-forth set, with the Black Knights taking it by a 25-22 count. Central led at 14-13, but Army came back with three straight points to take the lead for good. A kill by Kaprelyan got the Blue Devils within, 23-22, before Army scored the final two points to take the set.
The Black Knights eeked out a win in the third set to sweep the match. The Blue Devils opened the set with a block by senior Maddie Smith and freshman Morgan Woycik, but never led by more than a point throughout. The set was tied at 22-all before Army scored consecutive points. A kill by Smith gave CCSU the serve, but Army came back with a kill to close the set at 25-23 and win the match.
Freshman Erin McDermott posted her second straight double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs. Kaprelyan had a team-high 15 kills, while senior Cassidy Stankowski posted 14 digs and nine kills. Senior Rachel Fish had 12 kills and moved into seventh on the CCSU all-time list with 1,081 career digs.
