Volleyball Downed by LIU Brooklyn, 3-0
CCSU hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team was defeated by LIU Brooklyn, 3-0 (25-20, 29-27, 27-25), on Saturday in Brooklyn, NY. Senior Makenna Lommori finished with a triple-double and senior Ashley Lenington added a double-double for the Blue Devils.
The loss dropped CCSU to 10-12 overall and 2-7 in the Northeast Conference. LIU Brooklyn improved to 7-12 overall and 6-2 in the NEC.
The Blackbirds raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first set. CCSU managed to get within 18-15 after a kill by junior Erika Jones, but LIU responded with three straight points to push the lead back to six points and eventually closed the set out.
The Blue Devils opened the second set strongly and junior Rachel Fish served CCSU to a 3-0 lead following an ace. The Blackbirds came back with two separate three-point runs and went ahead 8-5. The teams remained close throughout the set until LIU managed to close the set out 29-27.
Central took a 7-1 lead in the third set, but LIU came back to tie it at 13-13 forcing a CCSU timeout. The Blue Devils scored two points to retake the lead and later held a 24-21 lead. The Blackbirds rallied and scored the final two points of the match for a 27-25 lead.
Lommori finished with a team-high 17 kills to go with 13 assists and 16 digs. Lenington had 16 assists and 10 digs. Jones added 13 kills, while Fish and freshman Raquel Quirarte added 16 and 10 digs, respectively.
Tamara Ignjic led LIU with 17 kills and Nicole Hopton had 23 assists. Adriana Vinas Joy finished with 29 digs.
Central returns to action on Saturday, October 31, against Sacred Heart at 5:00 p.m. in Detrick Gymnasium.
