Volleyball Falls at St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday
Blue Devils to face LIU Brooklyn on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell at St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday afternoon. The Terriers won the match, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-21). Senior Makenna Lommori had 15 kills and 14 assists to post a double-double for CCSU.
The loss drops Central to 10-11 overall and 2-6 in the Northeast Conference. St. Francis improves to 4-20 overall and 1-7 in the NEC.
The Terriers took the first set after building a quick 5-1 lead. Central managed to get back within 8-6 following a kill by junior Cassidy Stankowski, but a 6-1 run pushed the margin back to seven for SFBK. The Terriers went on to score the set's final four points to take a 1-0 lead.
Three kills by Lommori and a Terriers attack error had the teams tied 4-4 to open the second set. Following a kill by junior Erika Jones, SFBK ran off five straight points to take a 12-6 lead. The Blue Devils would chip away at the deficit and eventually got within 23-22 after a kill by Stankowski. Following a timeout, the Terriers would rally to score the final two points of the set to win 25-22.
The Blue Devils trailed, 7-6, in the third set before a kill by Jones opened a run of five straight points for CCSU. Sophomore Maddie Smith served for Central during the run as it managed to take an 11-8 lead. The Terriers continued to trail until Saleesha Matthews served five straight points to give the home squad a 19-16 lead. A kill by senior Heather Trueman interrupted the run before SFBK came back with three more points to make it 22-17. The teams alternated the final four points of the match before a kill by Niehely Sosa ended the set, 25-21.
Senior Ashley Lenington finished with a team-high 18 assists for CCSU. She added a team-high eight digs to match Stankowski.
Dominique Gerard led the Terriers with 13 kills. Angela Hudelson had 18 assists. Maggie Niu had 11 digs to go with 11 kills.
Central is back in action on Saturday at LIU Brooklyn. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
