Volleyball Defeats Fairleigh Dickinson in Five Sets on Sunday
Lommori leads Blue Devils with a double-double.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-10, 15-11) on Saturday in Teaneck, NJ. The Blue Devils won the final two sets to win the match and were led by senior Makenna Lommori who had 19 kills and 19 assists. She added nine digs as well to nearly post a triple-double.
The win improves CCSU to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in Northeast Conference play. FDU slips to 6-11 overall and 0-3 in NEC play.
Fairleigh Dickinson took the first set, but Central bounced back in set two. The Blue Devils broke a 4-4 deadlock with three straight service points by freshman Kaitlyn Kushman to take a 7-4 lead. The Knights came back to tie it at 9-9, but sophomore Lindsey Massicotte served for three straight CCSU points to break the deadlock. The set remained close before a kill by Lommori closed it out to tie the match.
The Knights took the third set after scoring the final three points to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 sets lead. The Blue Devils rebounded in the fourth set with a convincing win after hitting .381 as a team. Lommori served five straight points to break a 4-4 tie and the Blue Devils never relinquished the lead. Central closed the set by outscoring FDU 10-1. Junior Brooke Schwab started the spurt with a kill and freshman Raquel Quirarte had back-to-back aces to spark the Blue Devils in a 25-10 win in the set.
In the decisive fifth set CCSU raced out to a 7-1 edge before the Knights rattled off three straight points to get within 7-4. After the Knights got within 13-11, Schwab set up match point for the Blue Devils with a kill and then took advantage of an error by FDU to win 15-11.
Senior Ashley Lenington finished with 23 assists, while Kushman and Quirarte each added 17 digs. The Blue Devils finished with 11.5 blocks as a team and sophomore Maddie Smith had six block assists to lead the way.
Alex Lolland led the Knights with 15 kills, while Allison Butler finished with 45 assists. Butler and Corey Lostetter each had 12 digs and Taylor Wyckoff had seven block assists.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bryant for a 1:00 p.m. match.
