Volleyball Tops Hartford, 3-2
The Central Connecticut volleyball team opened the 2014 CCSU Invitational with a five set victory over Hartford.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team opened the 2014 CCSU Invitational with a five set victory over Hartford on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against Providence.
The Blue Devils won the first (25-20), third (25-22) and fifth (15-11) sets to take the match. Hartford won the second (25-23) and fourth (25-21) sets.
The Blue Devils were led by 14 kills from junior Heather Trueman. Trueman was also solid on defense for the Blue Devils with 16 digs.
Senior Rachel Dunlap contributed to 10 of CCSU's 12 blocks in the match. Also playing strong defense at the net were freshman Nicole Celarek (4), sophomore Nicole Dean (3) and junior Makenna Lommori (1 solo, 3 assts.).
Lommori ran the offense for the Blue Devils and registered 47 assists on CCSU's 55 kills.
Dunlap also had a strong game on offense with nine kills on 16 attacks and a .438 hitting percentage. Sophomore Cassidy Stankowski also had a strong hitting percentage posting eight kills on 17 attacks with a single attack error for a .412 mark.
Lommori and sophomore Brooke Schwab each had seven kills to support the offense.
Senior Brittany Schumacher (14), sophomore Rachel Fish and Lommori (12) also contributed double-digit digs in the match.
The Blue Devils return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Providence College. That match can be seen live on NECFrontRow.com.
