NEC Coaches Tab Women's Indoor Track & Field As Team To Beat
CCSU won the 2021 indoor track and field championship and six NEC coaches believe they will do so again this winter.
Women's indoor track and field collected six first place votes and are the preseason pick of the coaches to capture the 2023 Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship.
The indoor crown marked the first for the Blue Devils, who scored 98 points and tied for the team crown with FDU. The CCSU distance group was dominate at the championship, posting 64 points. Angie Rafter won gold in the 3,000, mile and 5,000 and anchored the Blue Devils DMR championship team on her way to earning Most Valuable Performer. Rafter returns for the 2022-23 indoor season, and will run her first meet Saturday, December 3 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston U, in an elite 5,000m field.
Ashley Dana also returns for the Blue Devils after earning the MOst Outstanding Track (Distance) performer award at last years championship. She won the 800m and ran a leg on the BlueDevils win in the DMR.
FDU, second in the poll, LIU (third) and Saint Francis U (fourth) all earned first place votes in the preseason coaches poll. Sacred Heart was tabbed fifth, followed by Stonehill, Wagner, Merrimack and St. Francis Brooklyn to round out the poll.
