Women's Track Stands in Second After Day One of NEC Title Meet
The Blue Devils earned three medals and qualified four members to Sunday's finals.
Following the first day of the 2018 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD, the Central Connecticut women's team sits in second place with a total of 44 points behind the defending champion Sacred Heart.
The Blue Devils earned three medals and qualified four members to Sunday's finals.
Senior Brittany Mendelson took second place in the 10K to her rival from Sacred Heart Kate Svensen in the first event of day one of the title meet. Mendelson ran a time of 36:49.35 to lead the Blue Devils. Junior Dawn Hubbell placed fourth overall with a time of 38:22.66. The two combined for 13 points to start the day for CCSU.
Earning silver in the women's long jump was junior McKenna Kilian with a mark of 5.51 meters to score eight points for the Blue Devils. Junior Sierra Nesmith placed fifth with a jump of 5.33 meters.
The Central Connecticut 4x800 meter relay team won silver with a time of 9:26.71 (8).
Kilian earned bronze in the high jump with a mark of 1.64 meters to score six points for CCSU. Rospierski finished in fourth place with a jump of 1.61 meters.
Sophomore Megan Brawner charted the top 1,500 meter preliminary time of 4:50.95, qualifying for Sunday's finals with ease.
Junior Sierra Nesmith posted the top 400 meter hurdle preliminary time of 1:01.96 to qualify for Sunday's final round. Senior Melissa Wolliston came in ninth with a time of 1:04.46 and Kilian was 11th with a time of 1:04.77.
The Blue Devils will see two qualifiers in the 100 meter hurdle finals tomorrow after senior Melissa Wolliston and sophomore Hailey Rospierski placed third and fifth, respectively. Wolliston turned in a time of 14.62 seconds and Rospierski crossed the checkered stripe at 15.17 seconds.
Senior Olivia Mondo took 12th in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 40:36.72 and junior Morgan Ricci placed 14th and clocked in at 41:56.74 in their first time competing in the event all season.
Sophomore Erica Snape placed 11th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.76 seconds and senior Alleah Red was 25th with a time of 13.32 seconds. Snape also placed 11th (26.05s) in the 200 meter dash and Red was 24th (28.19s).
In the shot put, CCSU sophomore Valeria Hernandez was 15th with a throw of 10.44 meters.
Sophomore Arianna Taft placed 20th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:06.16.
The Central Connecticut women's outdoor track and field team will start competition tomorrow with the hammer throw final at 9:30 p.m. The track events will begin with the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 12:25 p.m.
