Women's Track Earns Six Medals at NEC Indoor Championship
The Blue Devils finished fifth overall with a total score of 65 points.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team took fifth place at the 2018 Northeast Conference Championships on Saturday, February 17 inside Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY. The Blue Devils received six medals and combined for a total score of 65 points. CCSU's junior McKenna Kilian won the NEC long jump title on Friday, marking the first time a Blue Devil won the event in program history.
LIU Brooklyn claimed its seventh program title, edging out the defending champion Sacred Heart Pioneers 109-106 in the final event of the 2018 championships.
Junior Dawn Hubbell earned the silver medal in the women's 5,000-meter run with a personal record time of 17:27.62 to gain eight points for Central.
The women's distance medley relay team took silver with a season best time of 12:17.86. On the second place DMR team was CCSU freshman Angelia Rafter, junior Sierra Nesmith, Kilian and sophomore Megan Brawner.
Sophomore Hailey Rospierski earned two bronze medals on Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump to grant CCSU 12 points. Rospierksi ran a collegiate personal best time of 8.94 seconds in the 60 meter and jumped 1.64 meters in the high jump.
Nesmith also tallied six points for Central in the women's triple jump with a monster personal record leap of 11.73 meters to earn bronze. Nesmith missed the longstanding CCSU school record triple jump (11.75m – Nicole Dumpson '03) by a mere .02 of a meter.
After standing in second place for most of the mile, Brawner finished fifth in the mile, running her best mile of her collegiate career, 5:03.64. Brawner previous fastest mile run of 5:17.42, came on January 5 of this season also at Ocean Breeze for the Wagner Invite.
Junior Madeline Mondo followed in Hubbell's footsteps in the 5K, taking sixth place to score three points for Central with a personal record time of 17:45.83. Senior Olivia Mondo also ran in the distance event, finishing at 18:51.73.
Nesmith scored for CCSU once again with three points and a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash final with a mark of 57.20 seconds.
Junior Abrah Toomey recorded a personal record throw of 14.62 meters on her third heave to place eighth overall and score one point for CCSU. Rookie Celine Delice also for a collegiate best distance of 11.10 meters and sophomore Valerie Hernandez posted a mark of 10.25 meters.
The women's 4x400 meter relay was run by freshman Arianna Taft, sophomore Erica Snape and freshman Jaekwana Newton. Central finished in ninth place with a time of 4:12.86.
The Blue Devils will next compete at the BU Last Chance Meet on February 25.
