Women's Track Competes at New Hampshire
The Blue Devils finished fifth out of seven squads on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, finishing fifth out of seven squads in the meet. The competition served as the final tune up for the Blue Devils as they gear up for the NEC Championship May 3-4.
Junior Ronea Saunders also represented Central at the North Florida invitational Saturday in Jacksonville, FL. Saunders cleared a height of 1.75m to claim the win.
Sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez helped lead CCSU at UNH on Saturday, taking the gold in the 200m dash with her time of 25.78. She was followed by freshman Sherise Truman in the event who crossed the line fourth overall in 26.16.
Gonzalez also demonstrated an impressive performance in her first outing in the 100m dash. She claimed the silver clocking a time of 12.74 in a field of 13 sprinters.
CCSU also racked up points in the 100m hurdles, led by senior Shelby Tuttle who won the gold. She crossed the line in 14.87 seconds and was followed by freshmen Melissa Wolliston (15.95) and Sarah Hicks (16.17) who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
A trio of Blue Devils registered career-best times in the 1,500m run including freshman Brittany Mendelson who finished sixth overall in a field of 34 with her time of 4:40.19. Mendelson was followed by sophomore Ally Gates who placed 12th with her own career-best time of 4:52.71. In her first collegiate outing in the event, freshman Jazmin Booker claimed 18th overall clocking a 4:59.38.
The shining performance in the field events came from sophomore Chelse Terry who earned the gold in the discus. She registered a 39.73m heave to take the win out of 16 throwers. Terry also competed in the hammer throw and the shot put finishing 15th and 12th, respectively.
Other strong performances for Central included a sixth-place performance from senior Meghan Burns in the 400m dash where she clocked a 1:01.77. Junior Shannon McBride also finished sixth in the 5,000m run, crossing the finish line in 18:30.68.
In the 400m, junior Jenean McCalla led the pack, grabbing fifth (1:08.02), followed by Wolliston (10th, 1:10.98) and freshman Brittany Williams (12th, 1:12.25).
UMass finished first, registering 188 team points, followed by New Hampshire (133), Vermont (92.50), Dartmouth (77) and CCSU (61).
The Blue Devils are set to return to action this weekend, May 3-4, at the NEC Championships hosted by Robert Morris University.
