Women's T&F Second at CCSU's Inaugural Track Meet
The Blue Devils placed second on Saturday at the Central Connecticut Track & Field Meet
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team finished second overall at CCSU's first track meet on campus in New Britain, CT since the early 1970s. The Blue Devils tallied several first-place finishes on the day including a gold-medal performance in the 5,000m run from sophomore Ally Gates. Gates clocked a time of 18.38.30 in the event.
Joining Gates in individual victories was freshman Sherise Truman, who topped the 17-sprinter 200m dash field with her time of 26.31 seconds. Truman also competed in the 100m dash, finishing third with her time of 12.91 seconds.
In the 100m hurdles, senior Shelby Tuttle claimed the win with her time of 15.08 seconds. CCSU took the top three spots in the event as Tuttle was followed by sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez (15.56) and freshman Melissa Wolliston (15.65).
Junior Ronea Saunders took first in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.75m as the only Blue Devil to represent Central in the field.
Saunders also helped CCSU finish second in the 4x400m relay. Joining Saunders on the relay squad were Tuttle, Gonzalez and sophomore Chantelle Deer.
In the other field events, sophomore Chelse Terry earned second in the discus with her toss of 39.00 meters and sixth in the shot put (9.95m) while sophomore Megan Duplice finished third in the javelin (30.96m).
In the 400 meter dash, Deer was the first Blue Devil to cross the line with her time of 1:02.16. She was followed by sophomore Alessandra Salmon (6th, 1:03.57) and senior Meghan Burns (8th, 1:04.13).
Junior Taylor LePage also performed well for CCSU, claiming third of eight in the 800m run (2:23.29) and 12th of 31 in the 1,500m (5:08.99).
The Blue Devils are schedule to return to action March 29 at Monmouth.
