Saunders Tops High Jump Field Friday
Junior Ronea Saunders placed first overall at the UAlbany Great Dane Classic Friday, tying her CCSU record 1.78m.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the University of Albany Great Dane Classic on Friday, finishing 11th overall out of 23 teams. Junior Ronea Saunders led the Blue Devils with a win in the high jump event. Saunders registered a height of 1.78m, tying her own CCSU indoor record.
With Friday's impressive performance, Saunders also qualifies for the 2014 NEICAAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Senior Shelby Tuttle, who owns the current CCSU record in the 60m hurdles, also qualified for NEICAAA competition in the event on Friday. She completed the finals in eighth place overall with her time of 9.03 seconds. Also in the 60m hurdles, freshman Melissa Wolliston qualified for the NEICAAA Championships with her preliminary time of 9.40 seconds.
Tuttle and Saunders also competed on the 4x400m relay squad. The team, also consisting of freshman Sherise Truman and junior Chantelle Deer, crossed the finish line in 3:57.90, good for 12th place overall.
In the one mile run, senior Krisztina Dearborn clocked a 5:13.67. She finished second in her section, 10th overall, just out of scoring position for CCSU.
Dearborn was followed by junior Shannon McBride who finished in 5:24.27 (18th) and freshman Jazmin Booker who placed first in her section (19th overall) with her time of 5:30.88.
In the 800m run, junior Taylor LePage finished 17th out of 36 runners with her time of 2:23.12.
In the field events, sophomore Chelse Terry competed for CCSU in the weight throw. Her toss of 14.37 meters earned her seventh place overall out of 22 throwers.
The Blue Devils are set to return to the track on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Boston University Terrier Invitational.
