CCSU Opens '14 at Yale; Tuttle Breaks 60m H Record
Senior Shelby Tuttle broke her own CCSU record in the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.90.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team opened 2014 at the Yale Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils were led by seniors Shelby Tuttle and Krisztina Dearborn as well as junior Ronea Saunders.
Tuttle broke the CCSU record in the 60m hurdle finals with her time of 8.90, good for fourth place overall and besting her own record of 8.91 which she set last season. Tuttle was followed by freshman Melissa Wolliston in seventh (9.29).
Saunders claimed second place overall in the high jump, registering a new season-best height of 1.75m and Dearborn finished third of 33 in the 3,000m run with her time of 10:15.41.
Dearborn also competed in the one mile run where she registered a new career-best time of 5:08.45 for eighth place of 46 runners. She was followed by junior Shannon McBride who crossed the line 16th in her own career-best time of 5:20.84.
In the 400m dash, junior Chantelle Deer finished ninth out of 52 competitors with her career-best time of 59.29 and was followed by classmate Jenean McCalla (34th, 1:02.99).
McCalla also helped Central to a seventh place overall finish in the distance medley relay, crossing the finish line in 12:41.27. She was joined on the squad by sophomore Ally Gates, junior Taylor LePage and freshman Brittany Mendelson.
The Blue Devils also competed in the 4x400m relay where they placed eighth of 21 squads. Central's team featured McCalla, Wolliston, sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez and freshman Alleah Red and crossed the line in 4:06.34.
In the field events, sophomore Chelse Terry placed 11th of 28 in the shot put (11m) and 19th of 25 in the weight throw (12.37m).
The Blue Devils are set to return to action Friday, Jan. 17 at the Great Dane Classic.
