Blue Devils Sweep NEC Weekly Awards for Second Consecutive Week
Czulewicz and Maziarz take home swimmer and diver honors once again
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards and had four Prime Performers. For the second week in a wor Katie Czulewicz was named Swimmer of the Week and Jewelle Maziarz earned Diver of the Week. Megan Dunnigan was named the league's Rookie of the Week, and the trio were all named NEC Prime Performers, along with Abbey Keane. The honors come after a pair of dual meets versus UConn and URI, to wrap-up that portion of the 2022-23 season.
Czulewicz contributed wins in six of the seven events which she swam, with a second place in the 100 free at UConn. She won the 200 freestyle in both meets, touching in a season-best 1:52.99 Friday night at UConn, which is the third fastest time in the NEC this season. She also won the 500 free against URI, going 5:11.49 Saturday versus URI. Her 100 free time of 53.28 Friday night is her top swim of the season. Czulewicz contributed legs on three winning realys; the 200 free relay in both meets, and the 200 medley to start off the day versus URI.
Maziarz earned Diver of the Week accolades after another strong showing on both boards. She tallied 248.10 points on the 1-meter board on Saturday against URI, to earn second place. Her top 3-meter score of the weekend was also at home, tallying 229.20. She scored 220.65 on the 1-meter at UConn, and 213.68 on the high-board Friday night.
Dunnigan took home Rookie of the Week on the strength of a season-best swim in the 200 backstroke versus URI, where she touched in a winning time of 2:06.45, the seventh-best swim in the league this season. She also won the 100 backstroke on Saturday, swimming her best time of hte year, at 59.73. Dunnigan also tabbed season-best times at UConn in the 100 fly, 1:00.05 and 200 freestsly,e 1:58.09.
Abbey Keane picked up prime performer recognition for winning the 1,000 free in both dual meets. She negative split her way to a victory Friday at UConn, touching at 10:32.96. Saturday she lowered that time to 10:32.31 and now owns the third and fourth fastest times in the league this season. Keane also swam the 500 freestyle on Saturday, placing second at 5:14.25.
The Blue Devils are next in the pool at the 2023 NEC Championship. The meet will be held February 21-25 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, OH.
